Introduction
If you have earned no new commissions and your account carries a balance of commissions earned that cannot be paid because you have not provided your payment information, your account is deemed inactive. After 12 months of inactivity, Rakuten will charge you a fee.
This inactivity fee covers the cost of ongoing account maintenance for inactive creator accounts with commission balances. We will not deduct an inactivity fee if an account has no commission balance.
Note
Rakuten will always comply with local laws when returning unclaimed funds through the escheatment process. In the United States, this generally ranges from one to five years of inactivity. After escheatment, the property is held by the state for the owners.
Creator Impact
Most creators will never have an inactivity fee deducted from their account.
We make every effort to pay commissions as quickly as we receive funds from brands. We will never deduct an inactivity fee from an account without first trying to pay those funds out with the instructions provided. However, the success of our payment depends entirely on the payment information you provide us.
The account will be held if funds are returned to us or a check is not deposited. You will be notified of the actions needed to resume receiving payments.
Fee Amount and Process
The fee is 10% of the balance or 10 currency units, whichever is greater, with a monthly cap of 50 currency units. Inactivity fees are deducted from your account balance each month.
A currency unit is the standard unit of monetary value used to calculate commissions in your account. For example, if the commission balance in your account is in USD, then the applicable currency unit is USD.
No or Low Balances
Deductions stop once your account has no remaining commissions or is escheated. Your account will not go into a negative balance, and you will no longer owe an inactivity fee.
Example
You have a balance of 1000 currency units. 10% of 1000 is 100, but the cap is 50. This means the monthly fee is 50 units until your balance drops below 500.
Once your balance falls below 500, the monthly fee is 10% until your account balance reaches 0 or is escheated.
Update Payment Information
The best way to ensure your account is never charged an inactivity fee is to keep your payment information up to date in your account profile. Once we can pay out your funds, we will stop deducting the inactivity fee.
Account Reactivation
If you become active again, even if there is activity on your account for only one month, your count of inactive months will be reset. You will not be subject to a fee unless you reach 12 consecutive months of inactivity with an unpayable balance.
